In this activity, students collect and observe macroinvertebrates from a local freshwater stream.
Earth is called the blue planet due to the abundance of water. About 70% of the surface of the Earth is covered by water, and it is the only natural substance that can be found on Earth in all three states – liquid, solid and gas. Due to this unique property, water can be found just about everywhere.

Kōura (freshwater crayfish, Paranephrops planifrons, P. zealandicus) are one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s original inhabitants. They have an ancient lineage that diverged from their Australian relatives about 60–109 million years ago. Because their entire life cycle requires freshwater, kōura are evidence that there has been continuous freshwater in Zealandia ever since our part of Gondwana broke up 60–80 million years ago. As far as our evolutionary history goes, kōura are as significant as tuatara, wētā and kiwi!
It is going to take all of us working together to rebuild the health of our rivers and streams. In this story, we meet Dr Amanda Valois who is working to build community connections and engagement with freshwater health.

In this activity, students build an aquifer model and examine how water gets into an aquifer system.
New Zealand has over 200 species of freshwater macroinvertebrates. An invertebrate is an animal that lacks a backbone. ‘Macro’ means the invertebrates are large enough to be seen without magnification – even though some can be as small as 1 mm in length. Examples of aquatic macroinvertebrates include crustaceans (such as sand hoppers), insects (such as beetles and mayflies), molluscs (such as snails) and segmented worms (such as leeches).
Parts of the Hauraki Plains have become killing fields for ducks and eels as summer heat exacerbates existing habitat problems.
